Hi! My name is Sarah Smallwood and I live in Lawrence, Kansas, with my beautiful family (husband – Micah and daughter – Paige) and our 2 little fur babies (Penny Lane and daisy Mae). I am a travel nurse and I specialize in ER. I have done some psych and charge nursing as well. I do a lot of research in every area I work in on a regular basis. If I have an order for a test that I am not used to, then I research to see why we are doing it and what it will tell us. I especially love to research new diagnosis and treatments. I think all nurses look up meds and dosing information. I use those resources everyday. My favorite site, right now, is UpToDate, just because you can get the newest information and it covers everything on the topic. Sometimes, you can just peruse the site to find new, cool information that you were unaware of before. It is important for us to stay “up to date” on the newest information in our field. Learning is a passion of mine and if I could get paid to go to school, I totally would!!!
Before nursing I had many jobs in the medical field. I was an EMT, a tech, a phlebotomist and a CNA. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to work from the bottom up and am even more fortunate to be able to continue on to NP school this next summer. My goal is to be accepted at either KU or Vanderbilt and start by summer 2019. After graduation, we are planning on finding a place to settle down on an island. We have not quite decided where but we are hoping somewhere in Jamaica or Puerto Rico. We travel a lot and love to explore new places.
I apologize for the late post. I was out of the country for a few weeks but I am back, now and am going to be fully involved!!!
Welcome Sarah!!
I totally agree with your statement: “It is important for us to stay “up to date” on the newest information in our field” I see many nurses who just do the day to day and not push forward. Nice to meet you.
Thank you! Nice to meet you, also!!! 🙂
Hi Sarah,
Welcome to the classroom. I also love UpToDate! There is a wealth of information on that site where you can get data from past papers and the current practice as well. I truly hope you get into one of the 2 schools you mentioned.
Thank you so much! I am excited to get started!! And UpToDate is my favorite. I have used other sites and apps but I find that it gives the best, fastest and newest information of them all. I had a doctor introduce it to me and I have been hooked. I’m such a nerd. LOL
