Introduction

Hello everyone, my name is Ashley Moody. I am originally from Manhattan, Kansas but currently live outside a small town, called Silver Lake. My husband and I have been married for a little over a year now. We stay extremely busy working on our farm and spending time with family and friends. We have two dogs, Rusty (a fox red lab) and Gunner (a 10 week old black lab). I graduated from Manhattan Area Technical College in 2015 with my LPN and earned my Associates Degree in nursing in 2016. I began working in the health care field in 2010 after I had obtained my CNA license and began working at Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan, KS. I worked there from 2010-2017. During my time there I wore “many hats”, I worked as a CNA, CMA, LPN, RN, assisted with surveys, taught courses, served on numerous safety committee’s as well as several leadership teams. In 2016, I accepted a full time job at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS working on a Medical/Surgical floor specializing in neurological conditions such as strokes, seizures, etc. I have been working there for just over two years! I currently serve as a preceptor for Baker and Washburn Nursing Students and for new hires.

Research is a key component in nursing. Ongoing research allows us to identify various protocols/supplies that are outdated or ineffective and prompt change in order for us to provide quality care to our patients at the bedside. Recently at my place of employment, we identified that some of the current supplies we were utilizing were ineffective and because of this lead to increased amount of time changing bed linens, increased cost due to increased use. Because this was identified, our staff did some research in order to identify a higher quality item. Long story short, because we took the time, we are now saving our unit money, time, and are able to provide higher quality care to our patients. Research is also important because it allows nurses to GROW and FLOURISH allowing us to provide the best possible care to our patients every single day.

Hi, Ashley, it’s nice to meet you! We have relatives in Silver Lake, Haverkamps, ring a bell. I know it’s small town. My husband grew up not far from there, Wetmore, I am sure you are familiar:)
I agree with what you said about research. Reevaluating and developing practices based on the research found, is essential to growing and flourishing in all healthcare professions. I am glad we all are moving to that if we haven’t already.

    Hello Ashley!
Your statement “Research is a key component in nursing” is so true. Everything in nursing is founded on research, starting with Florence Nightingale asking why are all these soldiers dying? Nightengle’s actions prompted change, establishing protocols and providing better patient care and outcomes.
    Have a great semester!

Great to meet you, Ashley! One aspect of research you will learn from this course is research vs. utilizing the research and conducting an investigation to create practice improvement. Your story really illustrates a great quality improvement initiative! Great job, thank you for sharing.
