General Information:
China Central Television (CCTV) Video News Agency is a Newsagency based in Beijing, China, focusing on but not limited to telling stories happening in China to the world (CCTV+, 2021). CCTV+ works with leading organizations in more than 130 countries and regions (CCTV+, 2021). “It provides raw footage to broadcasters and production companies” around the whole world (Zoominfo, 2021), in addition, to live streaming, News materials, News Sources, and other customized services (CCTV+, 2021).
Why am I interest?
As a Chinese student studying in an American university, my future career development tendency is mostly in China, and my dream is to work in an international news agency. Almost all Chinese students with the same major as me regard entering CCTV as their first dream. I think it will be the best result if I can apply all the experience and knowledge I have learned in China and the U.S. for many years.
Research on the Employers
My interest in CCTV+ grew as I research and learned more about the company’s benefits. Even though the salary of an intern is low, it’s a great opportunity to get training on such a big platform right after graduation. If you become a full-time employee, you can get housing subsidies, transportation subsidies, provident funds, and supplementary insurance. Although the pace of work is fast and I can’t get off work on time, which I think I can put up with compared to staying up late to do my homework every day. I’m satisfied that I get paid overtime for working on weekends.
Questions for employers
I have always heard that the press in China is not free of speech. Some news cannot be reported in China, but people can still read these reports on the Internet. I also have to be more cautious working in a central unit. If I don’t think the interviewer will just throw me out, my questions are:
- Who reported the hidden news? Was it a foreign journalist or was it leaked secretly?
- What topics should not be reported?
- Should we always say good things when referring to our national leaders?
- Is it true that the interns commented that the older employees of the company were very bossy towards the younger ones?

General Information:
As the national English-language daily, China Daily has the largest print circulation in China (ChinaDaily, 2021). It has more than 300 million readers on Sina Weibo, WeChat, Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms in China, and is now a multimedia information platform integrating all forms in one (ChinaDaily, 2021). China Daily actively propagates the thought of socialism with Chinese Characteristics proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, disseminates and shares Chinese culture to the outside world, with the purpose of creating a good international public opinion environment, enhancing the influence of Chinese culture, and enhancing the soft power of national culture. So, it has been used as a guide for Chinese government policy and the Position of the Chinese Communist Party. (ChinaDaily, 2021).
Why am I interest?
While practicing English at college in China, my two sources of learning were ChinaDaily and Voa. At that time, I thought ChinaDaily was very difficult. Now, there are still many words about politics that I don’t know. But now that I have accumulated some English foundation, I am more eager to challenge this national comprehensive English daily published around the world. Working there may be more pressure than ordinary Chinese news agencies, but I get to continue practicing my English ability, and I can stay in a familiar environment work system, which is more suitable for me, a fresh graduate who is willing to learn and bear hardships.
Research on the Employers
After my research, I know why ChinaDaily articles are professional and difficult to understand. The articles on the ChinaDaily were either written directly by foreigners or were the final contributors, with Chinese journalists providing raw materials or the first draft. Because China Daily, like other newspapers in the world, has staff from all over the world, including many native English speakers. This greatly enhanced my interest in ChinaDaily. I like to find and shoot raw materials, but I am not good at writing, which is exactly what I expected.
Questions for employers.
- Can I work remotely?
- Can I protest if my article is revised too much during the final draft?
- As the first English-language daily news organization in China, does ChinaDaily have a high voice in the international arena?
- Where are news sources come from when people are confined to their homes due to COVID-19?

General Information:
Xinhua is one of China’s largest, longest-running, and most influential news agencies (Zoominfo, 2021). Xinhua established a global coverage of news and information gathering network, formed a multilingual and multimedia news release system, collection agency feeds, television business, such as the Internet and new media business, 24 hours a day with eight languages (Xinhua, 2021), to the world of all kinds of users with articles, pictures, graphics, audio, video, etc. all kinds of news and information products.
Why am I interest?
My interest in it comes from a relative of mine who works in the photo department of Xinhua News Agency. Of all the forms of carrier, I think pictures are the most comfortable and easiest to do. I was envious that he worked for a well-known news agency and that his job was relaxing. Including the two big companies listed above, they are all very famous news agencies in China. My honest idea is to list all three and then carefully compare which one is more suitable for me.
Research on the Employers
After I talked to my relatives and looked through all the information, my enthusiasm for it decreased a bit. First of all, Xinhua focuses on producing news for China, and there are few international sections. Moreover, Xinhua News Agency is mainly based on text news, and pictures need to be done by professionals. In addition, social news, science news, and current political news account for the largest proportion, while sentiment news I am interested in accounts for a very small proportion. Finally, I heard that working in Xinhua is very intense and there is almost no time for rest. For beginners, promotion is difficult and time-consuming, and the salary is not high.
Questions for employers
- Is it ok if I work remotely from home?
- Do I get paid for working on weekends and holidays?
- Is it true that one year’s work experience is required before entry?

General Information:
New Oriental is the “largest comprehensive private education company in China” (New Oriental. 2021). The main services include English training, mathematics tutoring, software teaching, and so on. There are also counseling courses for different groups, such as overseas study preparation courses, and promotion courses for primary and secondary schools (New Oriental. 2021). New Oriental schools recruit teachers from different countries to teach students according to their aptitude. The innovative and interactive teaching methods are different from traditional Chinese teaching methods so that students can explore and enjoy knowledge in class. This is an important factor in its success in the field of education (New Oriental. 2021).
Why am I interest?
For the last one, I did not want to apply for a job in a new company, I decided to work in the education industry. New Oriental is a very famous education chain company in China, and I have taken English lessons there. My feeling is that all the teachers are very friendly and professional, and their relationship with students is more like the relationship between teachers and students in American classrooms. My main intention is to teach English to high school students who are going to study abroad, I am really looking forward to more in-depth communication with students who have struggled with English like me in the past.
Research on the Employers
I asked if someone like me with a foreign education background but not a major in education could get in, and I was told that I could if I passed the written test and interview. I need to get some professional training before I officially start my career, but it’s all about being responsible to students, which I quite agree with. The teaching of New Oriental is targeted, and I can also make a customized plan for the students personally, which is suitable for me, I don’t like to follow a step-by-step plan. Plus, the salary of new Oriental teachers is very attractive, far beyond that of journalists and broadcasters. This is the company I’ve been most interested in so far.
Questions for employers
- Is it true that we have to work on weekends?
- Can I apply for an online lecturer? What are the requirements?
- China is now trying to keep down the tutoring agencies. How will this affect companies? Will this job be secure if I am hired?
