TikTok took the social media world by storm recently. Many of us became familiar with the TikTok application during the nationwide quarantine last year, however it actually was created in 2016. TikTok has been regarded with some apprehension, by myself included, but some people took to it and went viral almost instantly.
I discovered TikTok through my friends network. They would send me videos that they thought I would enjoy, I would entertain the idea and click on the link. After receiving so many videos from them that I did, in fact, enjoy, I finally accepted my fate and downloaded the application. Now, the biggest reason I finally downloaded the application was simply because I didn’t like having to go from one application to another to watch the video. In my mind, things worked better if I went to the application with the intention to review my messages and watched the videos they sent me all in the same place. With all of this in mind, and the fact that the application is still on my phone, I would say I have reached the confirmation/continuation stage. I now go into the application daily, I review the videos sent to me, and I scroll through my “For You” videos and send them to friends I think of when I watch certain ones.
I would definitely say that my process followed in this situation was that of a person in the late majority category. I was skeptical of the application, I actually still don’t make videos for it, but I enjoy watching what others create and sharing them in my friends network. I don’t think there’s ever been an innovation where I didn’t follow that of the late majority category. I tend to approach new things with caution, giving them the chance to fail before they take me down with them. I fell into this category when cell phones hit the market, I think it took me about 6 years after they really exploded the markets before I ever went to get my first Nokia brick style phone. I kept a giant box tv and my VCR for 10 years after everyone else was getting flat screens and DVDs. It’s entertaining to see myself working in IT and having to adopt what my work deems necessary, when I do not agree we should go with such bold and new tech so early.
