Secondary Research and Saturation of my topic

Search Topic

My search topic is how society feels about the deployment and use of Self-driving (autopilot) vehicles in society. I plan to research both domestic and international feelings over the use of automated vehicles (AV) and to figure out what people specifically are skeptical about when considering accepting this new form of smart transportation. I also aim to discover just how many people would be willing to accept, how many people would be hesitant, and how many people would fully reject autonomy on our roadways.

Search One:

Database: Computer Source (through FHSU Library, run by EBSCOHost)

Search Terms and Restrictions: automated vehicles (no other search restrictions)

Number of returns: 280

I decided to start with this as I felt it could give me some good information that I could use to further knowledge related to my topic. Starting with something simple allowed me to observe what all results I could get from such a small search. I discovered that I could find some helpful information, but otherwise, most of the information is about general deployment and vehicle control. I will have listed below a source that I was able to find from this search, one of few useful responses.

Search Two:

Database: Computer Source (through FHSU library)

Search terms and restrictions: automated vehicle acceptance (no other limiters)

Number of Returns: 6

This search is not nearly as useful as the search before, especially since the database doesn’t seem to have nearly as much about automated vehicle acceptance. It still has a small number of results that seem to somewhat lean towards the sort of information I am looking to procure. This database search could be useful if I really needed the extra information, but I don’t think this search will be useful for much more than a small, emergency information grab.

Search Three:

Database: Applied Science & Technology Full-Text (Ran by EBSCOHost)

Search terms and Restrictions: acceptance of automated vehicles (no other restrictions)

Number of returns: 3

My next search brought me some great sources I could possibly use to further my knowledge on the acceptance of automated vehicles. In fact, two-thirds of the results came up with information that I may be able to use in my research (these sources will be in the Annotated bibliography). This search really narrowed down my results and allowed me to see exactly what I wanted to see easily, without including very many extraneous sources. I think I will definitely be able to use this database search to build on the information I already have in order to support data presented in other parts of my research or even to present new information in my research.

Search Four:

Database: Applied Science & Technology Full-Text (Ran by EBSCOHost)

Search Terms and restrictions: international acceptance on self driving (time frame 2016-2021)

Number of returns: 157 total

I chose to use this as my next database search as it seemed like it could be useful in providing me with some international feelings on self-driving vehicles in society. However, after some time spent trying to find useful sources, I was really only able to find one or two sources that stood as worth the search. Unfortunately, this search was not really as useful as some of the other ones I have done, although it did still provide me with one good result. If I were to use any of the resources from this search, these resources would probably be categorized under backup, not really any primary information.

Search Five:

Database: Applied Science & Technology Full-Text (Ran by EBSCOHost)

Search terms and restrictions: governing self driving (no other restrictions)

Number of returns: 1

The final search I did was over the possibility of finding any information on any laws or regulations put into place that could help people with their hesitancies. This search only yielded one result, but that result does have some use to it for what I need it. Otherwise, the search didn’t really help all that much, unfortunately. If I find I need to do more research, though, I can always use these keywords in another database to determine if I can find any more information. If I do end up using the source or this search, any information I find would either be backup information or a form of providing examples of how the worlds’ governments are trying to make autonomy safer for everyone.

Have I reached saturation?

After doing as much research as I can to discover as much information as possible about automated vehicles, I believe that I have reached saturation. I do not believe any additional research as needed at this time, but I feel that if it becomes necessary to do more searches, I am now more aware than I was before about good search terms and information I can use to narrow down my research to find more about what I am wanting to research. If it weren’t for these assignments, I would never have thought about looking into public transportation for my research, and I would never have thought about using the search phrase “autopilot”, in addition to some of the keywords I had already found. I believe that I am satisfied with the information I have been able to find throughout this class.

Bibliography Thesis:

In my bibliography, I plan to research into public approval and hesitance for the introduction and use of self-driving vehicles on our public roadways. I plan to discover both domestic and international opinions and study just what people find they are skeptical about with this new technology.

Annotated Bibliography

Becker, F., & Axhausen, K. (2017). Literature review on surveys investigating the acceptance of automated vehicles. Transportation, 44(6), 1293–1306. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11116-017-9808-9

I found this source during my third database search. This source looks to study the public opinion on Automated vehicles in the public. The source also aims to discover when, why, and how Automated vehicles would be put into use. There are several different studies and tests run in this source, with their results aimed to help us understand what people think of this new piece of technology.

This source is amazing for my research because it is helping me find exactly what I am looking to find. It provides me with public opinion and with other important information about automated vehicles, everything I would need to support my research paper. This source seems reliable and unbiased as they took their time to find their sources and interview a fair audience to determine their results and information.

This source is useful as it provides great information regarding my research plan. It provides many great details for public opinions and uses for automated vehicles, and may even be able to help with figuring out what people are hesitant about with automated vehicles. This relates to more of my sources because it builds on previous findings and allows me to create a better understanding of my research.

Detjen, H., Faltaous, S., Pfleging, B., Geisler, S., & Schneegass, S. (2021). How to increase automated vehicles’ acceptance through in-vehicle interaction design: a review. International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction, 37(4), 308–330. https://doi.org/10.1080/10447318.2020.1860517

I discovered this source while looking through the first search type. This source seeks to research and discover Automated Vehicles and how they can be a successful product if produced and used correctly. The source then goes on to study and summarize research that has been done on AV interactions and possibly create an understanding of this technology.

I believe this source could be put to great use when I would want to find good research information on what issues may exist and how people would interact with this technology. This information may not be primarily used, but I would still like to incorporate it as backup evidence to support claims made by other sources. I believe this source is reliable and unbiased as its goal is to research AVs and provide consumers with all the important details we want to know so we can trust this technology and someday use it.

This source is helpful as it will provide some important backup information to help support other parts of my research. I believe it relates to other sources that I have found and will find because it provides the important acceptance information and issues I am wanting to research and highlight with AV. I will use this source to fact-check and back-up other sources I find in my research.

Dong, X., DiScenna, M., & Guerra, E. (2019). Transit user perceptions of driverless buses. Transportation, 46(1), 35–50. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11116-017-9786-y

I also found this source while reading through the third searches’ results, and it is full of great information that I never knew I could have considered looking at. This information is crucial to understanding how people feel about automated intelligence taking over our transportation, including public transportation. This source looks into how people feel about buses being transformed into driverless vehicles. Knowing how people feel about mass transportation being changed into an automated fashion will be important in understanding acceptance.

This helps me with research because it opens new doors that I hadn’t previously thought about. Now that I remember that public transport is a thing and it’s a very important topic, I will definitely want to use this source to discover as much as I can regarding how people feel about this large of a change. The studies provided seem fair and unbiased in that they study the population properly in order to discover how people feel about the change.

This source is very useful as it uncovers new information that will help me discover more about how people tend to feel regarding automation taking over their daily lives and their transport. This relates to my sources as it brings more information regarding my topic to the table that I can put into my research to bring out the best product possible.

Karnouskos, S. (2020). Self-driving car acceptance and the role of ethics. IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, 67(2), 252–265. https://doi.org/10.1109/TEM.2018.2877307

This source came from my last source research for this assignment. The source aims to define the ethics of self-driving vehicles and push to better understand how these vehicles make ethical decisions and how these decisions will help us better feel comfortable with the vehicles. The source does its best to link these ethics to human nature, with the intent of showing people that in stressful, unavoidable accidents, the computer will have the ability to make fast decisions with benefits for as many as it possibly can. The source also compares the link between several ethical frameworks to the success of self-driving, I.E. how it reacts to several different scenarios.

This source could potentially be able to help me in providing backup evidence describing what people are concerned about with self-driving vehicles. Unfortunately, I don’t see the source as being able to help me with much more than backing up other evidence, but anything that supports anything else helps, as long as it’s credible.

This source seems reasonable and unbiased as the authors attempt to research how these vehicles’ ethics are built in order to create a well-formed opinion on how these vehicles will be on our roads. While the source won’t be used for providing new information, I can match it with some other research on connections between attitudes or beliefs and this self-driving, as the source talks about comparisons between frameworks and the vehicles’ possible success.

Qu, W., Sun, H., & Ge, Y. (2021). The effects of trait anxiety and the big five personality traits on self-driving car acceptance. Transportation, 48(5), 2663–2679. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11116-020-10143-7

This source comes from my fourth database research over international acceptance. This source took studies of over 500 Chinese drivers through several questionnaires about demographics, traits, and other options. The intent of this study was to try to discover what attitudes or traits had more effects on people. Some attitudes, like openness, while other attitudes, like higher agreeableness, led towards more worries. This source allows me to gain a lot of useful information about what international opinions there are on self-driving.

This benefits me and my research because the information I was able to find in this source is able to lead me in a great direction for understanding more about how the general public feels about these autonomous vehicles. This source is even better because it finds opinions from places other than the United States or Russia (the two primary areas I have been finding information about recently). I am definitely wanting to use this source as a primary source to basically say “while Russia and/or the US feel this way, China has these opinions and here is how they are similar or different”.

This source is very useful and seemingly unbiased as they took a relatively large sample size of drivers in China and sampled demographics and responses. The researchers ensured the studies were properly conducted, and I could tell that they were proper and professional. This relates to some of my other sources as it brings more international information regarding what people think about the advancements in technology that may come sooner rather than later.
