Is video games a cure for dementia?

Hypothesis:

The creation of serious video games will help to improve or prevent dementia in the elderly. If we play video games, will it help keep our minds sharp and lower the chance of getting dementia as we age?

Outline:

Introduction:

  • Explain the difference between video games and serious video games.
  • Explain what dementia is.
  • Explain why I feel that video games and serious video games can help prevent or reduce the effects of dementia.

Literature Review:

  • Koivisto (2015) – regarding the study of three games and focused on memory impairment.
  • Santamria (2011) – will help with the history of video games and how it has expanded into serious games.
  • Coutrot (2019) – This was an actual test between virtual and real-world tasks given to people with dementia
  • Cheon (2015) – this is about cognitive achievements in serious games

Methodology:

  • Prefer to find participants who are already in the beginning stages of dementia and see if they would participate in a three-month study. To play specific video games for two hours a day for three months. Then go to a doctor to see if there are any improvements.
  • We will also have a control group that is not playing video games
  • The results would be added to a table

Discussion:

  • I would discuss the results of the study and compare them with the literature that closely relates to my hypothesis and determine if this would be helpful to those that already have dementia or help prevent dementia.
