Electric Vehicles and Charging: How Rapidly will the U.S. Adapt?

The U.S. is rapidly embracing the change from gas and diesel powered vehicles to electric vehicles or EVs.  Impacts such as the current administrations aggressive goals to reduce pollution, address climate change, and use more renewable energy resources through recently passed legislation pushes this change and it has been evident that vehicle manufacturers are increasingly making plans to switch to an increased number of EVs in the future. Research shows that benefits to EV’s include easier upkeep, energy efficiency, quietness among other environmental benefits.  Drawbacks are cost and availability of vehicle charging options.

The study I completed which was a survey via email addressed respondent’s intentions to buy and EV as their next purchase and included questions addressing whether funding, charging availability, or vehicle size was an impact in their decision.  I assume from my research that cost and charging availability would be top factors, especially since the location of most of my respondents are areas where charging stations are not prevalent.   Results showed that less than half of respondents would consider purchasing an EV and just over half thought that expansion of EV’s will support a decrease in pollution.  It could be concluded from the results that cost and charging availability are top factors in decisions to purchase EV’s and that the size of the vehicle intended to be purchased by the respondent may relate to the intention to purchase an EV.  It could also be noted that less than half of the respondents believe that state and federal support and incentives should be used to entice buyers to switch to EVs.
