Adverse effects of Social Media

Database used: JSTOR

Coyne, S. M., Rogers, A. A., Zurcher, J. D., Stockdale, L., & Booth, M. C. (2020). Does time spent using social media impact mental health?: An eight year longitudinal study. Computers in Human Behavior, 104, 106160. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chb.2019.106160

The source used for the subject search brought up 1,910 results with 1,435 of them being journal articles. The search in general was a useful one as it allowed me to find other potential sources to use for my research assignment. Additionally, the other sources found expands on my argument that too much exposure to social media does have a overall negative impact on our mental health. Furthermore, it provided insight into other avenues I could discuss to make my paper whole such as other forms of media and its affects such as increased aggression and outside social interaction.

Database used for tracing: JSTOR & Google Scholar

Antoci, A., Sabatini, F., & Sodini, M. (2010, December 23). See you on facebook: The effect of social networking on human interaction. Retrieved October 30, 2021, from https://mpra.ub.uni-muenchen.de/27661/1/MPRA_paper_27661.pdf.

When conducting the tracing for this source, I found that fifteen (15) other sources have cited it so far. On the other hand, the authors for “See you on Facebook: The effect of Social networking on human interaction” Antoci, Sabatini and Sodini cited thirty-seven (37) sources to gather the desired data and information for their article.  I also credit google scholar because on JSTOR, I was only able see the who and number of sources that the authors cited in the article. With that said, I did not see who or the number of other authors that cited the article itself.

The subject search brought up a total of 1,805 search results with 928 of them being journal articles. I would go on to say that this search was somewhat useful to me because it also provided a plethora of potential sources which will give me more information for my assignment.

  1. Great post, Finn! It does bring up some new topics in class, though.

First, we haven’t had a title like that first one in class: Does time spent using social media impact mental health?: An eight year longitudinal study.

That should be cited without the colon. The question mark is all that is necessary. Never add a second grammatical mark when an element already has one.

Also, the second source you used is not published in an academic journal. According to the MPRA website, it’s a repository for working papers. Before using a paper like that, see if the authors have managed to publish it. Then, be wary about using it. Could lead you to great research, but it may not be a great study itself: https://mpra.ub.uni-muenchen.de/
