Search One (JSTOR)

Key Terms: social media, negative impact, college students, seniors, productivity, united states.

Academic content is refined to use only academic journals and I used Boolean terms such as “AND” which came to 99 results.  This search being conducted was generally helpful for me as it provided potentially useful sources for my assignment. It also provided insight on different routes I could potentially take for other searches. One potential source is:

Lee, E. B. (2015). Too Much Information: Heavy Smartphone and Facebook Utilization by African American Young Adults. Journal of Black Studies, 46(1), 44–61. http://www.jstor.org/stable/24572928

The article “Too Much Information: Heavy Smartphone and Facebook Utilization by African American Young Adults” focuses on the smartphone and Facebook usage in AA college students. Furthermore, it analyzes some predictors of overuse including demographic and personality. Additionally, it takes a look at correlation between social media overuse and academic performances. Lastly, it examines the psychological impacts that it has on African American college students. This source is entirely useful to me as it covers each aspect of my research topic and it takes a look into a demographic that I belong to myself. The source helps my argument that social media overuse has a negative impact on individuals and society at large.

Search Two (JSTOR)

Key Terms: Social media, addiction, workplace,  negative impact, mental health, productivity

Once again filtered by academic journals only, my search results amounted to 114 whilst only using the “AND” Boolean term. Generally speaking, this search was not as useful to me as the results spoke on unrelated topics for the most part.

Search Three (EBSCOHOST//Academic Search Premier)

Key terms: Social media, mental health, good/bad, impact, effect, influence, adolescents, young adults, teenagers, seniors

This search was also limited to only academic journals which brought resulting amount to 182. Boolean terms used here were “AND” and “OR”.  This search proved useful to me as well because it helped me to find an article that I could potentially use for my research topic. As time goes, I will sift through the results even more to find more possible sources for my research. Potential source:

O’Reilly, M. (2020). Social media and adolescent mental health: the good, the bad and the ugly. Journal of Mental Health29(2), 200–206. https://doi-org.ezproxy.fhsu.edu/10.1080/09638237.2020.1714007

The article is titled “Social Media and adolescent mental health: the good, the bad, and the ugly”. It provides insight into the role that social media plays in the lives of adolescents and the impact it has on their mental health or if there is any correlation. Participants in the study being discussed talked about what they deem as the good bad and ugly regarding social media. Discussing the benefits as well as the negative impacts it has.  This source is very useful to me as it helps my argument that social media usage does have an effect on mental health but also there are some benefits to its usage. It hasn’t changed my view on the overall research topic at all but does provide good insight from the perspective of younger children which is good.
