Annotation
The Effectiveness of Social Norms in Fighting Fake News on Social Media discusses how social media users can be encouraged to report misinformation as well as support platform providers’ efforts in taking action against it. The researchers compared the effectiveness of injunctive norms versus descriptive norms when participants viewed both real and fake news stories and how often they reported the fake news stories as false. The researchers described injunctive norms as “what behavior most people approve or disapprove” and descriptive norms as “what other people do in certain situations”. The research showed that the use of injunctive social norms in indicating the desired reporting behavior led to nearly double the amount of reporting of fake news. The use of descriptive norms did not have a statistically significant effect. They did note the combined use of both injunctive and descriptive norms had the most significant results and could be a remedy against fake news.
This source was useful in that it addressed a specific method of identifying and handling fake news within a social media platform. The source appears to be reliable and objective. Their goal was to determine the effectiveness of social norms in assisting the moderation of fake news stories on social media. One potential weakness to their study was their participants. They recruited from Facebook groups for students. While this is good for getting participants who are active social media users, students do tend to be younger so older social media users were likely unaccounted for. The average age of their first sample was 23.2 years old and was also 70% female. Their second sample had an average age of 25.6 years and was 60 % female.
Overall, this source is very useful for my research. User interaction and involvement in the content moderation process could be a significant factor in increasing the trustworthiness of the moderation process
