It’s believed that attention spans have been shortened and that lectures should reflect this as well. Should lectures be shortened to 8, 10, or 15 minutes to reflect this?   “In 2015, a study commissioned by Microsoft and discussed in Time magazine found that the
average attention span was in fact only 8 s”. So if this were the case then one could argue that lectures shouldn’t be the length that they are. However, some claim that the information provided during those 15 minutes or less will most likely not be retained. Another big issue is how to measure a student’s attention span. The most common way is tracking a student’s heartbeat and when it drops. This isn’t necessarily an accurate way. Another way includes clickers and personal assessments.

The conclusion of the article concludes there is no effective way that confirms lectures should only be 15 minutes or less. The best way is for teachers to continue to find ways to keep students engaged in the lectures.
