The main point behind this article is to inform the reader on current figures being evaluated over the past year on music streaming & revenue, and where the different number of artists reside in this wide spectrum. To summarize the online article, the top 1% (around 870) of artists on Spotify are making over $1 million a year in streaming revenue. Roughly 4.2 million other artists reside in the <$1,000 range. Streaming-wise, the median 50th percentile is averaging about 16 monthly listeners with around 7,000 artists receiving over 1 million monthly listeners. On a level of disparity, Spotify listeners get, “91 times the monthly listeners of the 50th percentile” in the 90th percentile. Comparatively speaking, South Africa is the leading country across the world in income disparities coming in with 90% receiving 5.3 times as much as the 50th percentile.
Cross-referencing the information with other online sources does determine the information is reliable. I wouldn’t say the information is biased, considering the main focus revolves around the disparity between the majority of artists vs. the privileged few at the top. I do think this information is helpful and evaluating it does make it easier to grasp.
I would use this information to help the reader gather an idea of what the music streaming market looks like all around, not just from how much the services are making vs. the artists. This can help show how the current algorithms may be flawed or highlight areas where improvements could be made.
