Initial/ Current Idea

  1. Your initial research idea and your current research idea. If there are changes, tell us how they are different and why. What led you to change your focus? What I had initially stated as my research idea it is still very similar and in the same field as I had first stated. It is still having to do with bio tech. As we have reviewed some readings in this course up until now, it made me realized that I needed to specify my idea as what I originally had was very abroad. I want to minimize my search into a bio tech study that occurred and how it is doing to this day. I still have not yet decided what study and that is something I am still deciding. Possible development of insulin?  Hormonal growth? Narcolepsy? Epilepsy?
  2. What do you want to find out in your research area? Would there ever possibly be a cure? Are these safe procedures that will not cause long term effects? Is it more effective for certain ages? or race? Hereditary?
  3. Have you already found research related to your idea? If so, what is that research? There is an undergoing research that there may be a possibility that a drug can help improve symptoms for narcolepsy patients. “A new version of a narcolepsy drug that patients take once at bedtime — rather than at bedtime and again in the middle of the night — safely and effectively improved symptoms in a trial led by a researcher at Stanford Medicine.” (Stanford Medicine, 2021)  https://med.stanford.edu/news/all-news/2021/09/narcolepsy-drug.html
  4. Peruse Forsyth Library Databases and/or our library guide to identify at least three databases you could use to begin your search for related research.
    • 1. CQ Researcher: In-depth reporting on current controversial issue. Give up to date sources and not once that are over 10 years old.
    • 2. Bio One:  full-text articles from high-impact, peer-reviewed journals. Allows for great resources for what my topic falls in.
    • 3. AccessMedicine: Allows research on online medical resource procedural videos, patient safety modules, diagnosis tools, quick reference, self assessment modules and more. Giving an idea and chance to preview how research procedure works.

  1. Hello:

Did everything make sense to you?
Yes because she made it clear that her topic will be on narcolepsy and drugs/treatments for it.

Would you suggest different databases, additional keywords, or some other change in strategy?

I found that BioMed Central had a lot of information on various types of mental and physical disorders. For example, I found a lot of information on mental health disorders that arise from social media addition. My searches gave me over 4000 hits when I typed in “Internet culture” and over 2oo when I typed in “body image and social media.”

What are your thoughts on your classmate’s topic?

Narcolepsy is one of those disorders that aren’t easily diagnosed because it shares qualities of other neurological disorders. I wonder how many workplace accidents are really caused by narcolepsy rather than by incompetence and drug abuse.

Are there any parallels with your research plans or another classmate’s plans?

Yes. We’re both researching what causes certain neurological and mental disorders. In my case, I am researching how online peer pressure towards teenagers to look and behavior like the dominant “cool culture” affects their mental state negatively because it goes against their own best interests. On the other hand my classmate is searching for neurological cure for an ailment.
