Potential Employers

Riot Games

Address:

12333 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064

Website:

riotgames.com

Contact Information:

Unfortunately, I was not able to find a direct email to anybody in charge of media at Riot Games, but I did find the LinkedIn account of their president of entertainment (Riot Games, 2021)

Contact:

 Shauna Spenley, President of Entertainment

General Information:

Riot Games is the company behind the one of the most popular games in the world League of Legends. It’s also home to one of the biggest e-sport scenes with people competing worldwide. Streaming is a big part of how they reach their audience so there is a lot of media production and entertainment involved as well.

Why I’m Interested:

When I was a little kid and learned that people could go pro at a video game, it inspired me and quickly grew into a dream of mine. It died very quickly because I realized I wasn’t the best at competitive video games. So instead, I would like to try and use my love for both the game and media production to become a shout caster for their live broadcasts.

Questions to help me succeed:

How would everything work if we were forced to work remotely again? How much on airtime should I be expecting as a newcomer? When scripts are involved would we be able to preview them before rehearsing?

Cloud9

Address:

2720 Neilson Way, Santa Monica, California 90409

Website: cloud9.gg

Contact Information:

I was not able to find a contact, as their contacts page just leads me to the careers page for anything involving a job (Cloud9, 2021)

Contact:

Jack Etienne

General Information:

Cloud9 is an e-sports team that first started out in League of Legends but quickly branched out into other games. They are one of the most notable e-sports organizations as they have won several tournaments spanning various games. Media is used a lot inside of their organization to help promote their brand and for entertainment reasons.

Why I’m Interested:

I have been a fan of Cloud9 since 2014 when I first started playing League of Legends and saw the hilarious personality that the organization seemed to have. I enjoyed the content on their YouTube which helped draw me into e-sports and I one day hope to do the same.

Questions to help me succeed:

When creating content is there an assigned area of interest or do I get to pick? How often should I be expecting to travel? Would I be assigned to a specific platform such as Twitter, Instagram, or Tiktok?

IGN

Address:

2231 S Barrington Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90064

Website: ign.com

Contact Information:

ign_general@ign.com

Contact:

Tina Amini, Editor-in-Chief (IGN, 2021)

General Information:

IGN is a media organization that makes content over a variety of topics. Some of the most notable are probably their video game and movie reviews. There are all kinds of content to find on their main website, such as videos, articles, reviews and so on.

Why I’m Interested:

Having the ability to make content over a mix of stuff that I am extremely interested in such as movies and video games that can reach a wide audience would be cool. I want to express my own opinion with the world and see how they react as it will help me learn about myself more.

Questions to help me succeed:

How long would the training period be? Are the reviews purely opinionated or is there some type of standard?

Upcomer

Address:

There wasn’t a specific address or location listed unfortunately.

Website:

Upcomer.com

Contact Information:

editorial@upcomer.com

Contact:

Sean Morrison, Editor-in-Chief

General Information:

Upcomer covers all things e-sports from every genre of competitive games (Upcomer, 2021). They share various articles that span from being about a specific game or talking about a person of interest in the community. The site also keeps up to date with all the matches going on and the current scores.

Why I’m Interested:

Competitive games and watching competitive games were one of my favorite pass times growing up and at the time there wasn’t too many people interested in it. Seeing Upcomer make an entire website based around e-sports has been extremely satisfying because it helps show that there is a future for e-sports.

Questions to help me succeed:

Would the job be more remote or in person? What is the average length of a deadline? How are mistakes handled?

I'm a Sophomore who's majoring in Informatics with a focus on Digital Media Production. I plan on doing something production related after College but I'm not too sure yet. I'm big fan of esports and hope to get into that growing industry if possible.

  1. You’re obviously very passionate about e-sports and the journalism that comes with it. I hope to see you shout casting somewhere someday. I think your questions, especially for Riot and C9, are very important ones to ask to get a feel for what your new job will be like.
