Potential Employers

CrowdStrike

  • Address:  150 Mathilda Place, Ste. 300, Sunnyvale, California
  • Website:  https://www.crowdstrike.com/
  • Phone: (888) 512-8906
  • Contact:  Justin Williams, Senior Cyber Security Recruiter

General Information:

Crowdstrike is a large cybersecurity company that provides products and services for endpoint security, network security, cloud security, threat intelligence, and incident response.  Although headquartered in Silicon Valley, they have a presence in many major cities around the world as well as remote working opportunities.  Crowdstrike has been involved in investigating a number of very significant network intrusions and data breaches.  They produce an annual global threat report which addresses major cybersecurity incidents and threat trends.  These reports show not only the breadth of their practice but also how thoroughly they dig into threat actors and techniques to understand and prevent them.

Why I’m Interested:

I’m interested in CrowdStrike because they are well-known in the cybersecurity industry.  Their customers include many notable organizations that would be interesting to interact with and assist.  CrowdStrike’s size would likely provide a fair amount of opportunity for advancement.  The Careers page on their website bills CrowdStrike as a “Remote First” company.  Remote work would be beneficial for me as it wouldn’t require relocation.

Questions to Help Me Succeed:

  • As the cybersecurity industry grows and becomes more competitive, what new technologies or capabilities do you see implementing to stay ahead of or differentiate yourself from others?
  • Given the size of your company, as well as its many remote workers, how do you communicate with one another and maintain a cooperative work environment and positive work relationships?
  • What roles or specializations are typical within the career path of an incident response analyst?

FireEye

  • Address:  601 McCarthy Blvd., Milpitas, CA
  • Website:  https://www.fireeye.com/
  • Phone:  (877) 347-3393
  • Contact:  William Dempsey, Senior Cyber Recruiter

General Information:

FireEye’s products include endpoint security, cloud security, email security, network security, and forensics and incident response.  They’re also a large and well-established cybersecurity business with a worldwide presence and many remote work opportunities.  Initially started as a network security appliance business, FireEye has greatly expanded its offerings through acquisitions of other cybersecurity companies and the development of new software products.

Why I’m Interested:

FireEye is an established presence in the cybersecurity industry.  I’ve previously used some of their software and was impressed with its ease of use and performance.  Their split from Mandiant does cause me some concern as far as the incident response part of their business.  Much of that had been performed under the Mandiant name and it appears that Mandiant is keeping the consulting portion of the business as well.

Questions to Help Me Succeed:

  • What benefits will new ownership bring for FireEye?
  • What gaps will they have to close as their business will soon split from being owned by Mandiant?
  • Will certain roles be eliminated or transferred to Mandiant?
  • Will specific types of technical positions have to be added to fulfill tasks that Mandiant personnel previously performed?

Grayshift

  • Address:  931 Monroe Drive NE. Suite A102-340, Atlanta, Georgia
  • Homepage:  https://www.grayshift.com/
  • Phone:  (833) 472-9539
  • Contact:  Rachel Ko, Senior Technical Recruiter, rko@grayshift.com

General Information:

GrayShift is a digital forensics company whose primary product is GrayKey.  GrayKey is offered to law enforcement, military, and other government agencies to extract data from iOS and Android devices.  It is unique in its ability to brute force device passcodes and obtain and decrypt encrypted data from certain devices.

Why I’m Interested:

Unlike many other digital forensics or device exploit vendors, Grayshift limits the sale of its product to certain countries.  This determination is made by considering the lawful use of the device as well as civil liberties, due process, and other legal factors in those countries in consultation with several non-profit human rights research and advocacy organizations in North America and Europe.  Some other businesses that deal with technology vulnerabilities and exploits are much less discerning and have drawn serious criticism for providing tools to oppressive governments or criminals.  Their technology is very useful for obtaining a more complete amount of data from devices.  In turn, this provides a more accurate picture of the activities on a device and is helpful for both inculpatory and exculpatory evidence in investigations.

Questions to Help Me Succeed:

  • With device security and vulnerability research in a constant tug of war, do they have plans to diversify their product or service offerings beyond just iOS and Android data extraction in case their data extraction capabilities become more limited or impossible due to security changes?
  • What kind of projects or tasks would I be working on?
  • What training or educational opportunities are available for employees?
  • Are employees required to sign non-disclosure or non-compete agreements?

Magnet Forensics

  • Address:  2220 University Avenue East, Suite 3, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
  • Website:  https://www.magnetforensics.com/
  • Phone:  (844) 638-7884
  • Contact:  Erin Elsebroek, Talent Manager

General Information:

Initially started as a free, personal software project by an Ontario police constable, Magnet Forensics has grown to offer a variety of digital forensics and e-discovery software suites, digital forensics lab management, cloud forensics capabilities, forensic process automation, and recently announced the acquisition of a digital forensics company with expertise in video and DVR forensics.

Why I’m Interested:

I’ve been a user of Magnet’s products for close to ten years.  I’ve consistently been impressed with how easy their products are to use, the regular updates and added features, their customer service, as well as the contributions in research that their employees provide to the digital forensics community as a whole.

Questions to Help Me Succeed:

  • With the expansion of products and services, which one is the highest priority right now?
  • How does being based in Canada along with a physical presence in the US affect employee benefits?
  • How is employee performance measured and are there performance-based incentives?

  1. There are many defense systems for the public to choose from. But while downloading the defense system, some garbage will be downloaded randomly. (Some defense systems are not perfect.) Don’t underestimate this rubbish. They may carry viruses or leak personal PC privacy. As a predecessor of a defense system, FireEye defends against zombie viruses, spam, and so on.
