Topic 10 – The Development of Ethical Research Standards & Topic 11- Ethical Principles in Research

Topic 10…In the 20th century 23 doctors were involved with an  experiment to face trial for crimes committed under the guise of research. This was called the Nuremberg code. There was also a study called the Tuskegee syphilis study, It was a group of black men for 40 years from 1932 until 1972 to learn about the disease called syphilis. These participants were offered free Medicare, meals, and life insurance to cover burial costs. About one-third of the study participants did not have syphilis and served as the control group, the other two-thirds had syphilis prior to the start of the study. This study broke the national commission for the protection of human subjects of biomedical and behavioral research. It was turned into the institutional review board or known as IRB. IRB monitors and approves research projects involving human subjects .

Topic 11.. The principles in the nuremberg code and Belmont report stand for the participants must be protected from both physical and psychological harm. The Belmont report refers to this as the principle of beneficence.  This means that the research should strive to do no harm and to maximize all possible benefits. Another big part within research ethics is that it is justice, meaning that everyone is treated equitably and Fairly. By saying this there is also a principle called autonomy, which means that any person in the study has the right to make choices, leading to what is called informed consent. To obtain informed consent, researchers tell the participants what the purpose of the research is, what will be done to them, the benefits, and  what potential harm they might be in for. After the participants have given them consent they are debriefed, which means reviewing the purposes of the studies, the procedures that were done and an offer to share the results, when the results become available. The last part is, right to privacy. This is related to how data is collected, stored and reported, the researchers collected information in such a way that is confidentiality protected.

  1. Hello:

Research ethics is an important aspect of conducting research as it makes sure that the information was obtained by the set framework of conducting research. In this aspect view, studies need to abide by the following principles; intellectual property needs to be discussed frankly with the people the information is being sourced from. Secondly, there is the principle of reduced risk of harm to participants. In addition, there is the need for the protection of participants’ anonymity and confidentiality maintained(Legewie& Nassauer,2018).

Further, there is a need for the researcher to avoid deceptive practices when conducting inquiries and finally giving participants the freedom to opt-out of the research if they are unwilling to finish up. I agree with the above principles as they lay the ground for respect of human dignity when conducting investigations; the above also ensure that information is correct and is not misleading while making sure the participants are aware of their contribution to the research.
