Hello everyone! My name is Eric Mathes and I live in Kansas. I am currently majoring in Internetworking and Telecommunication with my main interest being in Cybersecurity. I decided to major in this subject due to my passion for computers and technology as a whole.
My main interest in researching a social scientific question is with regard to social media. Social media in general is something I have rarely been interested in and never really participated in such methods of communication online, outside of programs and apps I utilize for basic communication. While I’m not certain what exactly I would want to seek out with this general topic due to the vast number of things to look into, my main interest as of now has to do with how harmful social media can be on an individual, whether physical or mental.
My group name suggestion is: The Infomaticists
This is a very interesting topic. I personally feel that for some social media has been a blessing and not so much for others. We see a lot of fake news and posts nowadays and it is really difficult to differentiate between them. I personally feel that social media is a friend if you use it for right reasons.
Great topic to research Eric. Social media can be very addicting. I don’t use Facebook or any of the other social media platform, but my wife does and I see how much much of her time it consumes. It is a great way to keep in touch with people, but the developers have created such complex algorithms that allowing them to keep our attention almost like a drug.
