I can see how describing the severity of a problem’s impact on an individual would certainly be a great way to establish the importance of a problem and why it needs to be researched, especially when combined with the citation of statistics. Often times, offering up just statistics can feel too cold or robotic and can be easy for someone to dismiss, but when putting a face to that statistic, and describing how the issue is problematic for that specific individual, or group of individuals, you are now hitting a reader at a more emotional level. This is where an empathetic person is going to visualize themselves, or someone they know, in that problematic position and want to do something with your research (fund it, read it, do their own research, etc.).
I really liked your presentation. As said in the other comment, I think describing the severity of the problem helps make the situation seem more relevant to the reading so they can see the examples. Listening to your presentation has really helped me understand a literature review. My presentation could help further this because it lists other books that have in-depth QnAs on other topics that would help research. Amazing presentation!
