- What is the abstract of the article? (10 pts) Tips: This is usually a 200 word or less article summary. The abstract is your only cut and paste answer.
We examine factors behind firms’ decisions to contribute to open standard setting. Our study highlights a novel explanation: firms seek to improve their positions in an interfirm cooperation network. In the wireless telecommunications standard-setting organization we study, firms develop new technical specifications in small committees. Our panel data analyses demonstrate that interorganizational network connections influence firms’ decisions to support committees. Additionally, firms are more likely to support committees when they are technologically distant from the firm that initiated the committee. We argue that standard setting presents opportunities for information exchange and for accessing complementary R&D assets through the cooperation network
- Was the study experimental or non-experimental? Explain, tell us what made that clear. (10 pts)
I would say this study was non-experimental. 44 firms participate in order to see how they can improve their positions in an interfirm cooperation network. It is more logical than experimental.
- Was the research qualitative or quantitative? Again, explain. (10 pts)
The study is qualitative, they have examples with numbers, data, and graphs about network density, distribution of network connectivity, variables and descriptive statistics and more.
- What was the population studied? Why do you say that? (5 pts)
The population studied was firms participation in work-item committees in the 3GPP Radio Access Network group.
- What sample was used for this study? Explain. (5 pts)
The sample was a unique data set of 64 consecutive work-item committees and firms that supported them in 3GPP’s Radio Access Network Technical Specification Group for the period of 2000–2003. They also generated a set of network variables from the evolving social network induced by work-item committee participation observed in the data.
- What was the method of measurement? (10 pts)
- If the research was quantitative, was the measurement scale used, Nominal, Ordinal, Interval, or Ratio?
I would say the method of measurement is Interval. The variables are named, ordered, and proportionate well in their examples.
- What was the method of analysis? (10 pts)
- If the research was quantitative, what statistical tools were used to analyze the data? They had to do a measure of the technological relationship between each firm and the work-item sources. They take 15 key wireless telecommunications patent classes and define each firm’s patent profile. Each class has it’s holdings in the 15 patent classes. Next they find the firm’s technological distance to the work-item source as defined by Euclidean distance between their patent profile vectors. There are many diagrams, graphs and even regression analyses.
- What was the conclusion of the study? (10 pts)
The conclusion is that managers should pay more attention to the strategic information and opportunities in cooperative industries, and organizations. Also policy makers could potentially exploit firms’ strategic networking behavior in building industrial public goods.
- Why is this study useful to you? Explain in detail. (10 pts)
Firms tend to work in pre existing connections and continue to reinforce that through the years where they could benefit from new connections to organizations that are well established, supportive and changing constantly. With technology growing more and more each year I think it is important to expand, and continue to grow towards the tech world. I also found this study to be interesting and it caught my attention.
- What would be the next logical step in extending this study? (10 pts)
The next step I think would be to get more of the bigger firms and do another round of tests that would show the years from 2003-2021. Maybe use more color in their graphs so we can really see the difference in the years.
Hi Kayla
I noticed you work at a telecommunications job, and this research could help you with research opportunities at your job. This is a great pick for a research article for you and your career. It is unclear if you said this was qualitative or quantitative research, Question 3 at the top I thought said qualitative and question 1 towards the bottom said quantitative. I noticed the questions are not in bold per the assignment though. I am not sure that I am going to grad school to pursue research as Dr. Ginger states this will prepare us for but at least we will be prepared. I think you did a great job with this post.

Firms maintaining these pre-existing conditions seems like the best play for profit. New innovations are risky and costly to implement, so if what you’re using now makes money then maintaining status quo seems like a good idea for these firms. For this reason it is important to make sure new innovations are cheap to implement or companies will shy away from them.
Interesting. It seems as the world becomes more connected, data transmission and sharing increases rapidly. Research and development of new products and ideas is sped up tremendously. I’ve seen a few companies work together on projects occasionally and then release their own spin on the final result. It seems to work well and benefits both parties.
