General Information

NetApp got its start in 1992, back when using the internet meant dialing up and hearing beeps, crackles, and eeps. By tech company standards, we’ve seen it all. We’ve not only survived—we’ve anticipated each new wave of change to deliver cutting-edge technology that drives businesses forward (Netapp, 2022).

Why I’m interested

They are generally known as the best software developmental company that is local to me, which makes them one of the top places I would love to work for. I do know a few people that are currently employed by NetApp and they all have raving reviews about their experiences. They are also a company where you can move up the latter within the company, which would be a big benefit for me.

Questions I would ask

  1. What kind of projects would I be responsible for?
  2. Are there any growth potential inside the company?
  3. What Is the culture inside the company?
  4. How will my performance be measured inside the company?

Tyler Technologies was founded in 1966 and its headquarters are located in Plano, Texas. They engage in provision of integrated technology and management services for local government. They have around 6600 employees and 2,342 of those are developer roles within the company.

Why I’m interested

Researching Tyler Technologies, they got amazing reviews from past employees and current employees, so that’s always a great sign that it’s a very solid place to work at.  From what I found, their developers positions are very flexible and mostly remote, which would be beneficial to me.

Questions I would ask

  1. Since this position would be remote, what kind of training would I receive to get me ready for this role?
  2. What technologies does the team use?
  3. Can you describe the product you develop?

They are very well known in the tech world, as being a great place to work as a developer. As their headquarters is located in New York, them being remote is a benefit for me as well. I know this  a place I couldn’t start right away, but it is a ultimate goal of mine to end up there someday.

  1. Your question to Tyler Technologies about onboarding and training in a remote position is excellent! A lot of companies have been forced to go remote in order to stay safe, and then remained remote for a number of reasons, but many are still struggling when it comes to onboarding a new employee and getting them up to speed. Hearing them describe their process to you can give you an idea if they are company that seems to have that aspect under control or if they are still struggling to figure out how it works.

I think I would be a little hesitant to ask your last listed question to Tyler Technologies, or at least the way you asked it would give me pause, as I feel like you would want to have a decent handle on what it is they produce before an interview with them. A better set of questions about the product might something along the lines of “what was the most exciting piece of this product that you have been able to work on, and what is something that you are currently working on that has you excited?” I feel like that line of questioning your interviewer(s) in a space where they can talk about a specific part of the product that they are happy with, and may give you both an opportunity to learn something about the product you did not already know as well as provide a potential opportunity to talk yourself up some more. If someone were to say that it was when they were able to push x into production, it gives you something to react to “oh I read about that… [add follow up technical question about x]” or “oh that seems interesting, what was involved with pushing x?” and then you can wrap that discussion up with “that seems like the type of thing I would really enjoy working on.”

  2. James,

I also liked that your potential employer options were ones I have not heard of and I was able to gain knowledge of new companies through the brief introductions you gave. The one thing I would recommend is to cite your information for Tyler Technologies and then at the bottom include all your citations.

I think another potential question to ask about Clever Tech would be if they offer opportunities for the employees to get together. I would fear a complete remote experience would leave you feeling like you cannot connect to your co-workers. Where I work, a larger group handles the software development in a different location. They host annual knowledge shares and try to get out to each location a few times a year. This helps us get to know them on a better level other than just e-mails. I find it very helpful in connecting with them!
