Week Two Blog Post

For back story, I grew up in a very rural, small town in Oklahoma. And I lived in the “country” of that small town. And like the few neighbors we had our television signal was brought in by this tall antenna that was next to our house. If we were lucky, we would get four channels but on most days three. When I moved out at 18 my first adult purchase was a cable subscription.

Fast forward several years, married and living in an actual city. My wife and I were going over our budget and discovered that we were spending quite a bit on our entertainment. This included the internet, television, streaming services, and other things that aren’t necessities. Though, one could argue that the internet in this day and age is absolutely a necessity.

I started searching the internet cheaper live television options. Early on my options were just to jump back and forth between satellite and cable options. But those services come with contracts and when the price jumps, as they always do, you are locked into those contracts.

I knew about Netflix, and I knew about Hulu. At the time I believed that Hulu only offered a streaming service of a few television shows and movies. But I would discover that Hulu was now offering live television. This was important to me as I need to have live sports. After our current satellite contact was up, we ditched it and signed up with Hulu. And we have stayed with it for the past 4 years.

At present I am in the Confirmation/Continuation stage of the adoption. The price has risen some over the past four years but nothing that is extreme. Not only has the quality and price of the service been dependable but the ability to have it on the go has proved to be very enjoyable. If we are on a lengthy car ride our kids are able to use it to watch any shows want on their devices.

I don’t feel the need to discontinue my use of Hulu. There aren’t any service disruptions (outside of the internet being down). Even if the internet is down in my home, my cell signal is enough to stream any live content.

I feel as though my wife and I are in the Early Majority category of adopting Hulu. When we made the switch, others we spoke with would ask question about its service. More of than not, they also decided on Hulu.

Another technology that I have recently adopted is grinding my own coffee beans.  I know that particular technology has been around for a while. But I got a coffee grinder for Father’s Day last year and it has been one of the best gifts I’ve ever received.  I would say that I was definitely in the Laggards on that. I knew it existed. I felt that since I didn’t know how to grind my own beans or how the process worked at all that I would continue buying ground coffee.

Audio books are an older technology I know. But I do remember being the first in my friend group to enjoy and use them. I definitely feel like I am in the Innovators category.
