My initial research idea was focusing in on the tangible fears of a Russian Cyber Attack in response to recent international sanctions. I have further narrowed down that topic to focus on if, and how, the devices that we own and operate as consumers may put us at personal and national risk. My primary research question is “Do consumer IoT devices provide a viable attack surface for Russian cyber-attacks?” I have found some preliminary results that lead me to believe that it is possible. As a secondary research question I would like to explore “What do consumers understand about the steps required to secure their IoT devices?” This leans on some research that I performed earlier that explored what security hygiene information manufactures provided to consumers in the support documentation, so I think this would help to qualify the findings of my initial research topic.
I have perused most the 10 Informatics related databases available on the Forsyth Library site and the three that I seem to keep returning to are Computer Science Collection, Computer Source, and Project Muse. To this point I believe that I had the best luck finding relevant articles that pertain to my queries in these databases.
I think your 2nd research question will probably work best for your proposal, but it’s possible you’ll prove me wrong. I would be sure to switch to that second idea if the Russian focus doesn’t pan out well.
My research is a bit similar to yours. Though mine is more focused on the work place than the public at large. Your secondary research question is the most interesting to me. How much or what does the general public actually know about securing their devices?
Hi,
I think that you chose a very interesting topic to explore and research. Cyber security is always changing and it is important to keep up with it and know how to combat security attacks. It seems fair to think that most consumers probably do not know much about making sure their devices are safe. With that being said, I think it is important for people to gain more understanding in this subject, especially with cyber attacks becoming more common. I agree that you will find a lot of good scholarly articles from the three databases you selected as well.
