Week 8 Research Project thoughts….

I am excited about my research project of “Does Smartphones effect the way we communicate with each other?”. I am anxious to see what research has shown if we communicate

with each other worse in person than we did pre social media. I do think in some ways communication has improved but that has been due to us being able to send a message on a smartphone device. I am not sure people truly know how to communicate face to face.

  1. James, it does seem like you have an topic that interests you quite a bit, which is great! I would be curious to know how you plan to measure “if we communicate worse with each other.” Worse feels like a broad term, so I will be interested to see how you define better or worse communication and what you use as a measurement.

Along with using the computer science-based databases, I think you might be able to find some information under the Communications databases and the Communications Studies databases as well as looking at communication through a linguistics view. Additionally, the Communication Sciences & Disorders set of databases could provide an interesting take on the smartphone impacting our communication. It would seem to me that as technology, such as the smartphone, have become a staple piece of technology in our world, people that had limitations on their ability to communicate now have this technology to improve the efficiency of their communication. This would include people that are hard of hearing, it could include people that do not fluently speak a local language, and it could people that have a difficult time talking such as someone that is mute or someone that suffered a stroke.
