Diffusion of Innovation: Streaming Services

When I was growing up, if you wanted to see the latest movie in the comfort of your own home you would need to go to the nearest blockbuster. We can all see how things have changed now in such a short period of time. The evolution of watching movies at home has changed dramatically for the better. For as long as I can remember it started out with watching movies with VHS tapes, then it transitioned to DVDs, and now it has changed to streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu.

I think I discovered this innovation naturally like everyone else. Once things like Netflix became available to the public, I was using as much as I could. So it’s really hard to say when I discovered this new form of watching movies and tv shows. As far as adoption for this new innovation goes, I see myself currently on the same level as everyone else. I use these platforms for watching almost every movie and show that I am available to. These streaming services have made entertainment such a convenient thing to access now and I can’t even imagine if there is a way to make it more convenient than it already is. I believe I have reached the confirmation stage of this innovation a long time ago just like so many other people have.

I see myself part of the early majority adopter category. As soon as word got around about Netflix and how easy it was to use, I was using it almost every day. When it comes to innovations that I would be in a different category for, I think I would be part of the late majority for social media with things like Facebook and Snapchat. At the time of the boom of these apps, I didn’t care much for them because I knew I wouldn’t be posting a lot or spending much time on the apps. I later installed these apps for the reason that the rest of my friends had them and it was a good way to get in touch with my friend from high school that I had no other way of communicating with. For both of these innovations, I followed the trend and gave in to both of the platforms and if you will fit in like everyone else.

  1. Hi Nick, thanks for the post. It is great to remember back to the bygone days of Blockbuster. Even though streaming is so much more convenient, I do find myself missing the weekly trips to go pick up a movie for Friday night. Just the tactile feel of holding it in your hand and the anticipation on the drive home was fun. This may be lost forever, but I’m glad I didn’t miss out on it.

  2. So, you weren’t on Netflix when it was tentatively trying streaming and no one had the bandwidth for it? Then, most folks like me, got Netflix DVDs by mail. 😉
