Introduction and thoughts on research topics

Thank you so much for checking out my very first blog post. My name is Mark Ray and I am a IT Security Administrator for a Fortune 500 Supermarket chain in the Southeast. Although this responsibility occupies the lion’s share of my time, I find myself wearing many different hats. I wear the pupil hat (obviously) as often as time allows in pursuit of my bachelors in Cybersecurity. I also wear a home-renovator hat on the weekends as I’m trying to get my old home on the market and make a little money before the bubble burst. And must importantly of all, I wear the husband hat, where I find meaning and serenity in life’s challenges.

For a research topic I believe I would like to explore the potential advantages and pitfalls that are presented to communication with modern technology innovations. To be more specific, I would seek to understand how devices and popular communication mediums of today have impacted individuals interpersonal relationships. This topic intrigues me on many different levels. For example, does communication with friends and family via computer-aided formats make face-to-face interactions less important, or possibly less desirable even? Also, to what degree does the inherent anonymity provided be online communications effect what one is willing to share about themselves or say about others. I believe the topic, as so far as I’ve currently developed it, would lend itself more to a qualitative study. Data derived from findings in specific individuals may lead to identifying patterns in certain demographics that would suggest need for a quantitative follow-up study, however.

About Mark Ray

I am a middle aged man trying to find my way in an increasingly complex world. Despite the ever-changing landscape of life, I commonly find myself projecting a stoic reminder to colleagues and classmates that you only get something out of it if you give back. Find humor in the common and purpose in adversity, then let the cards fall where they may.

  1. Hi Mark! Nice to meet you. I enjoyed reading your first blog post for this course. Good luck with your home renovations & listing your home on the market. I closed on my house (first-time buyer) in March of 2020. We closed 2 days before the state shut everything down due to the pandemic. I about panicked because the moving company wasn’t sure they would still be able to make it that weekend to help move all of my belongings. What a crazy time to purchase a home with so much uncertainty then! Your research topics are indeed intriguing. Personally, I prefer email & sending a text versus face-to-face interaction. I hardly ever want to answer my phone, lol! Everything can be said via text. Good luck in this course!

  2. Hello, Mark. The questions you raise in your research topic are thought provoking. I can say from personal experience that face-to-face interactions have become less important in some ways to me. It’s easier to get whatever information I need thru a text or e-mail.

  3. Hi Mark, it is nice to meet you online! It sounds like you are very hardworking and I respect that immensely. I also think your research idea is very interesting. Communication these days can come in so many different ways. I look forward to collaborating in the future.

  4. Over time I have also put some thought into your topic. I really do feel like modern technology has affected personal relationships and how we perceive them. It is very hard to read emotion through text messages and at times can be misleading.
