General Information

Four Kitchens, founded in 2006, currently has 27 employees who work from their homes. It is based in Austin, TX but its employees live all over Texas. It incorporates Drupal, WordPress, Gatsby and JavaScript into websites and offers web development and design services. They have created content for NBC, Stanford University, Yale University, and The World Bank (Four Kitchens, 2021).

Why I’m Interested

I am interested in Four Kitchens because it is a small company whose core values align with my own. One of the core values listed on their site talks about being honest with one another. I really like that. I am currently working at a job where people tend to put on smiles and ignore the things that aren’t going so well, and honesty would be a nice change. Additionally, Four Kitchens employees give back to their community through volunteer work. Another major draw of this company is that it’s based in my hometown so there’s only a small chance of relocation. I have read some of their customer reviews and am impressed with the dedication to projects this company has. Four Kitchens recently won four W3 awards for their excellence in web development which tells me that they are innovative and up for learning new things. Learning more about this company has strengthened my interest in it. I really like the idea of working from home and was impressed with how quickly Ms. Balter got back to me with the information I requested. Each person in the company has a short “About Me” section that lists their strengths and interests. I read through these and I like what everyone is about. I would be excited to be a part of their team.

Questions to Help Me Succeed

  1. Because you’re based out of your home, how do members of your team communicate with one another?
  2. I am relatively new to programming. Will I have someone that I can shadow and learn from? How does that process work, being virtual only?
  3. If I am hired as a junior developer, is there opportunity for growth in your company?
  4. If I am unfamiliar with a particular coding language that you use, are there opportunities for me to learn that language? What does that look like?
  5. How do you communicate with clients since you work from home? Are there in-person meetings or is it all done virtually?
