Social Media & Extremism: A Proposal

Given the incredible changes to the world over the last two years, it is timely to reassess the relationship between political extremism and social media. COVID 19 has left people locked in their homes and looking for ways to fill the hours. Social media has become a place to find a semblance of community when we cannot see our friends and family. News regarding COVID responses around the world is easily assessable through social media. A number of right-wing extremist acts have been planned on social media. COVID 19 shined a light on the hyperbipartisan state of the United States. Masks, vaccination, and the such are political issues. The stances that people take on these issues draw a line between democrat and republican. With events like COVID 19 dividing Americans further, it is necessary to reexamine the role social media plays in the United States’ hyperpartisan politics.
