In this weeks blog, I will present my final hypothesis for my proposal, a simple flow chart for accomplishing my research goals, and close with a brief discussion of my research approach and methods of measurement to accomplish my project.
Hypothesis
It is my considered opinion that the viability of personal computer sales, production, and repairs has reached its zenith and is in a state of decline.
Flowchart
Research Approach
While some of the literature review may present quantitative numbers based on sales and production reports, this project will be based on a purely qualitative approach. Over the coarse of one year, with the permission of management at a selected retail store, I will place trained observers at four different retail locations encompassing the four corners of our community. Their job will be to catalog all personal computer, I-Pad, Surface, and smartphone sales at their assigned location. For those customers who purchased personal computers, I will have one of the observers approach the customer, introduce themselves, and, if the customer is willing to participate, present them with a short survey about their purchase and ask would they be willing to have it repaired in the future, should the device fail after the warranty has expired.
Methods of Measurement
Since this is to be a qualitative research project, I will be collecting data based on observations, and survey interview responses. My measurements will be a ratio of personal computer purchases versus all other devices, and determining if the responses the surveyed customers give support or weaken the position of my hypothesis.
