- My current idea for research is the same one I started with at the beginning with a slight title change to make it easier to understand the direction that the research will take. I want to look at the possible mental health problems associated with prolonged isolation and cramped conditions as a way to determine the viability of future manned missions to far away parts of the solar system.
- I would like to determine if mental health could be a major obstacle to the future colonization of the solar system. If so why? Also I want to see if it could be possible to mitigate the negative effects and what steps could be taken to do this.
- I have found one study relating to this subject. The abstract states that: “Terrestrial space analogs offer an excellent controlled environment to study some of these stressors during a space mission in isolation without the complex environment of the International Space Station. Participants subjected to these space analog conditions can encounter typical symptoms ranging from neurocognitive changes, fatigue, misaligned circadian rhythm, sleep disorders, altered stress hormone levels, and immune modulatory changes.”
- Three databases I could use are CORE, Journal of Applied Physiology, and ScienceOpen.
