Week 9 Research

Research Idea
Honesty my idea has not changed at all on what I want to do. I am going to do research on how smart devices have changed our social lives.  I have been excited to get started to apply to this topic on what I have already learned from this course.

What do I want to find out in my research area?
The biggest question I kind of what answered to how much this affects our close relationship with our loved ones including family, friends, and our close circle?

Have You find research related to your idea?
To be honest, I have not, but I haven’t really gone looked for it so I am guessing there is something similar out there.

Resources
Computer Source- This database has a lot of material I can chose from. Up to 300 publication.
Faulkners Advisory for IT Studies- Would have material that would understand implication that involve my research.
Computer Science Collection-  This database provides up to date information on computer and technology, which would pertain to my topic.

  1. Hello,
The premise of your experiment is clear. I think that it would benefit your project moving forward to determine what measures you will be using within the research design. The topic is clearly defined but likely difficult to measure. Your question pertains to how smartphones and other devices dilutes the connections we share between our families. Perhaps a survey of opinions will measure how a family or families feel about this? Or, you could compare two or more families that have rules both for and against restricting device usage? Cultural and personal definitions of what family relationships might encompass can also be considered. All around a fascinating topic that leaves lots of room for you to operationally define your experiment. As you research further, I expect that you will come across a lot of different opinions and methods of research that you can select to replicate.

  2. Hi,
How smart devices impact our social lives is such an interesting topic and has so many possibilities for an experiment. I think Benjamin made some great points in his post to you. Comparing families with different usage rules would be a really interesting experiment. From what I’ve read online, most people don’t believe that their amount of smart device use negatively impacts their lives. I wonder how you can get honest information about peoples’ usage before beginning your experiment. It seems that people may be inclined to answer a usage survey with what they think they should vs what they actually do. You mentioned that you wanted to see how their usage affects their daily life. Was there something specific you wanted to see? Maybe you can consider an experimental study where participants are asked to use their cell phones only for necessary calls for a week, for example, and you could record their “happiness score” before and after the treatment. I did this with my students once and the majority of them said they had a lot of fun with it and felt happier without all of the technology.

  3. That is an important topic. The proliferation of technology has drastically changed the way people interact with each other. Some tags you could add to get to 10 are tablets, interaction, friends, text, tweet, like. I do think this is a good topic and should prove fairly easy to get volumes of research data on. You could go back as far as the introduction of the cellular phone since that and email basically killed the letter as a form of communication. That could add a layer of depth to the research as to what kind of societal change and if it is a steady progression or more of an exponential curve.
