The research journal component of this assignment confuses me. The term is unfamiliar and suggests several possibilities. It could be a collection of summaries of articles that I find pertinent to my research topic. It might be a discussion of research methods employed in various projects reported in the articles. Perhaps a research journal is “A systematic record, usually written, that is kept by a researcher for the purpose of observing and reflecting on phenomena relevant to a particular research study. This method is used most to document spontaneously occurring events or those connected with the day to day experience of the researcher.” I will need some clarification to ensure that I approach this correctly.
After skimming several research articles, I have noticed many pertaining to my topic of the influence of graphics. Choosing the articles best suited to my topic will provide challenges, but I expect the most demanding task will be synthesizing my findings into a coherent report.
Of course, the most fun aspect of this assignment will be learning about the effects of graphics on users, a topic that has interested me for some time. Some graphics are universal, like the smiley face, which seems to appeal to all generations and demographics. Others, like a manga warrior or Dora the Explorer, attract specific groups, but inspire strong commitment. Almost everyone uses the smiley face emoji but no one uses the smiley as a theme to decorate a room. Many people do not enjoy Dora the Explorer, but some bedrooms boasted sheets, comforters, curtains, lamps, dollhouses, backpacks, aprons, notebooks, and t-shirts. What makes a graphic intriguing or uninteresting? Why do some groups gravitate to an image while others dislike it?
I am hoping this project will provide insight into this topic.
