The VPN – Diffusion of Innovation

A technology that has made the cyber world just a bit safer is the VPN.  I have been using a VPN for about a year now.  Previously I had just made sure that I only visited trusted sites and kept firewalls and antivirus software up to date, but did not get a VPN because I did not want to spend the money to pay for one.  I heard about them several years ago and kind of knew what they were for but they were never high on my priority list.  During the covid lockdowns my workplace had us working remotely and so that we could access the internal network with our remote machines got a VPN for each of us.  The one that we use is a good compromise between encryption and speed.  Since the more secure it is the slower it is, they struck a balance between the two.  I would say that in the IT industry I am likely a late adopter but in the general public more likely in the early majority if not an early adopter.
Another technology that I am using is two factor authentication.  I feel that I was an early adopter of this technology.  I began using this because of my job in the Army at the time.  Two factor was not widespread back in 2010 and really was only used for things that were extremely sensitive.  I still use this whenever possible since it is a good way to ensure that you keep your information secure.

  1. Nice blog post jshornbaker. I can relate to installing cisco vpn client for end users while working in a Federal Government environment which implemented 2 factor authentication long before private sector adapted it. The military and federal gov’t are definitely early adapters of new technology. Most countries are all adapters of new IT security innovations.
