What is autonomy and how does it apply in healthcare administration?

Autonomy provides the freedom to act according to one’s own will. It is similar to self-rules or self-governance. An example of autonomy would be when a physician allows a patient to make health decisions based on their own system of values and beliefs. It allows patients to consent to health-related choices that follow their beliefs.

What is HIPAA and why was it enacted?

Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act- It was created to put specified regulations towards the privacy of individuals’ personal health information, portability of health insurance, and to aid in the interchange of electronic data for certain financial/administrative operations. It helps limit the use of one’s personal information. We must complete a HIPPA training on a yearly basis at work since we touch patient information in our client’s systems.

What is the purpose of PHR?

A PHR is a personal health record. It is different than a patient’s EMR or EHR, because it is typically managed and controlled by the patient. Some information from patients EHR data can migrate into the PHR data. Patients can control some of their health information online. This makes it easier for organizations to share information when needed, as well as communicate with their patients.

What is General Semantics?

It is a philosophical system that was developed by Alfred Korzybski. This philosophy is focused on a system of linguistics that explores the nature of words and symbols. It attempts to enhance the way we use language. It can help with self-improvement and can help regulate mental habits and behaviors.

What is the process of abstraction or the abstraction process?

Abstraction process is something that Korzybski talks about within general semantics. He believes people tend to leave out specific information through the abstraction process. It is the confirmation and recognition of common features. One can abstract ideas from their head about specific details of a workflow.

Event: Something Happens

Object: Sense what happens

Description: Recognize what happens

Inferences: Generate meanings for what happens

In DSRP, what is a perspective? Use the abstraction process to provide your example.

In DSRP, the perspective is the point of view. What is going on (WIGO) with the democratic debate? People view politics as a perspective on the world. There are a few different parties that groups can choose to like and follow. The democratic party is one of those perspectives on the world within the political scene from which one views issues.

Fear/anxiety

Differing opinions

Candidate choices

Using the process of abstraction within general semantics, provide an example from the perspective of healthcare administrator.

What is going on (WIGO) with this new EHR implementation?

  • New system/applications/workflows
  • Unknown
  • Fear- change, job elimination
  • Excitement- Better integrated system
  • Anxiety- Additional work, dual maintenance during the implementation phase
