CM1 – Map 1 – Josefina Howard

What is your name?  Josefina Howard

Are you a graduate student? If no, what year? i.e. Junior, Senior, etc.  I am a senior student pushing hard to graduate by May 2020 with a Bachelor of General Studies in Human Services, Psychology, and Gerontology. I have an Associate of Applied Science in Social Work and I am a practicum away from completing an AAS in Substance Abuse Counseling. Caregiving for my elderly parents for many years inspired me to go back to college in 2011. I have been taking at least two online classes every semester since then. It has been a long and slow college journey because my military family, caregiving, home education, and ministry took priority over my academic and career goals. It is now my time to finish my personal goals. I will be the second first-generation college graduate in my Filipino family of seven children!

Where are you from? I was born and raised in Caloocan, a poor section of the overpopulated metropolitan city of Manila, Philippines with over twelve million people. I married a US Naval Aviator in 1989. Our military family lived overseas for seventeen years! Our two grown sons whom I home-educated for seventeen years are now serving in the US Navy and National Guard. My veteran husband and I are now “free birds” (better than “empty-nesters”) living in the beautiful rural Seale, Alabama with less than five thousand people! We have two high-energy Aussie pups! We are very thankful that cable television and internet services have finally reached our neighborhood early this year!

Why did you enroll in this class? I’ve always wanted to take a course on health administration. I want to be involved in healthcare human services. This class is a requirement for my Gerontology concentration. After this class, I have six more upper-level courses to complete my degree.

Have you ever heard of this teaching style?  No. Swarm Learning is new to me! I had to Google it and Dr. Schwandt to find out more about the Swarm Methodology and Dr. Schwandt’s works.

What are your initial thoughts? I was expecting the same teaching/learning methodology used by my previous professors which is the Blackboard. It was simple and predictable. When Dr. Schwandt sent the first announcement, I was overwhelmed by all the new tools he introduced!

What are your expectations?  I hope to gain practical knowledge and skills with regards to healthcare administration as well as become very familiar with Swarm Learning and other learning tools used in this class.

Did you use FHSU Free promo for Plectica?  Yes! I actually had fun creating my first map!

Did you sign up for Tableau?  Yes! I look forward to exploring Tableau!

  1. Hi, Josefina,

I really love the “free birds” concept! At the beginning of the summer our one-and-only child moved out. I’ve certainly had my moments that I felt like an empty-nester with the tears a second away but I believe you just gave me a new way to think of it. I do feel a little free – free of the laundry, cooking, and clean-up that comes with raising a child.

Good luck to you this year!

    1. Ha! Ha! Glad to contribute to your new perspective on being a “free bird” 🙂 Yes! Fewer household chores! As a matter of fact, my husband and I have taken Mayo Clinic’s recommendation of using paper plates so we do not have to wash dishes all the time!

      Best Regards,
      Josefina

      1. Hey Josefina,

great map and on a previous post i saw your interest in the Healthcare Management concentration of the MBA. I am doing it too and I love it. I was stuck between this and the HR concentration. I think I made the best choice for me. Let me know if you have any questions on my road thru the program so far. I’ve loved it. I graduate in Dec!

  2. Great job, Josefina! By the way, I am a US Army Major (my full-time job!). So I can relate a little. Look forward to seeing more of your maps!

    1. Thank you, Dr. Schwandt! I wonder if you have any recommendation for a good leadership book. My youngest son who is a member of the Texas Army National Guard successfully completed OSUT and Airborne training last summer. He is also a Junior student and a member of the Army ROTC at UTA Arlington. He is working hard to commission as an Army officer upon graduation. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated!

      Sincerely,
      Josefina
