Inner Workings of Inner Speech- Mikayla McKinney & Kaylee Hance

Inner Workings of Inner Speech
Mikayla McKinney & Kaylee Hance- Columbia College
Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Gretchen Hendrickson

The purpose of this study was to investigate dimensions of inner speech. Ninety participants from Columbia College were gathered and asked to complete the Learning-Specific Inner Speech Scale (LISS) and the Varieties of Inner Speech Questionnaire – Revised (VISQ-R; Xiang et al., 2019; Alderson-Day et al., 2018). In addition, a recall question and stream-of-consciousness exercise were administered. The initial intention was to test for reliability and validity. The study served as an exploratory research project. The results indicated clear relationships between the questions and their original categories, and there was overlap between the categories of the two main questionnaires.

  1. Mikayla and Kaylee- this is an interesting project! How did you get interested in this subject?

    1. Thank you so much! Mikayla actually found a social media post addressing people who do not experience any verbal form of inner speech and said she wanted to do more research on the topic. I was really interested in it as well, and we decided to work together on this project. As we read more articles about it, we realized there were so many avenues we could explore in relation to inner speech. We decided to go into this project and examine a couple of measures. This semester we have expanded and are looking at how inner speech impacts therapy experiences. In addition to that, Mikayla is also doing her capstone project on the relationship between inner speech and mental health!
