My Result: Steward
Stewards are the rocks of organizations. They’re dependable, loyal and helpful, and they provide a stabilizing and calming force for their employees. They value rules, process and cooperation. They believe that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and they move only as fast as the whole chain will allow. And they take care to help those who struggle. Working for Stewards offers the chance to be part of a well-oiled machine. It offers security, consistency and cohesion. It may not offer great opportunities for individual glory or an adrenaline rush, but it does provide great opportunities for team success. Stewards can often be found in mission-critical areas of the organization and they are often relied-upon by leaders in other divisions. For the appropriate people, it’s a great situation. Famous Stewards include George Washington, Mother Teresa and Ginni Rometty (CEO of IBM).
My quiz results showed that I am a steward. According to IEDP (2013) steward leadership is “a form of leadership which focuses on others, the community, and society at large rather than the self”. Steward leadership is very similar to servant leadership only instead of the goals and identity surrounding the leader, they surround the organization and society (IEDP, 2013). I definitely agree with my results. According to Murphy (2017), stewards are dependable, loyal, and value rules and processes. This explanation of stewardship fits my leadership style. I love to be guided by rules and processes and if there is not a policy, I will create or suggest to my supervisor that one is created at work. A possibly negative result of steward leadership is lack of individual glory and adrenaline rush (Murphy, 2013). Although I will say I definitely like an adrenaline rush, I do not believe I require much appraisal or credit for the things I do. Another trait of steward leadership is that they like security and consistency (Murphy, 2017). I definitely do like feeling secure and having consistency in my life such as when it comes to plans and schedules. I would like to think I’m typically more team-centered than focused on myself. All of these traits fit in with a steward leader.
