This semester flew by once again. The two classes I took this semester were Evaluation and Management of Healthcare Systems and Developing Nursing Theory. Both classes were very educational for me as we learned a lot about the current healthcare system and different factors that affect cost, quality, and accessibility. One of the big papers for Evaluation and Management of Healthcare Systems included a revision of a budget t for one of our hospital’s departments. For this project, I revised our home health budget to reduce staff hours while allowing the nurses to maintain full-time status thus keeping their benefits. This significantly reduced the budget by up to $20,000 per year. Another project for this class is posted under “Academic Presentations” and this powerpoint presentation reviewed rural grant opportunities. Developing Nursing Theory did a great job of incorporating how nursing theorists shape nurses’ and nurse practitioners’ work. I was pleasantly surprised to see how modernized in a way this class was and how theory is still very applicable to the current healthcare system and practice. Major works in this class include a concept analysis paper of the concept hopelessness and a powerpoint presentation that reviewed three nursing theorists work, how it applied to an admission form at our hospital, and a revision of that form to be more congruent with one of the nursing theorist’s work. This presentation can also be found in “Academic Presentations”.
