  1. Interesting study. What motivated you to research this topic? Any thoughts on addressing nursing shortages (particularly in rural areas)?

  2. Hello, thank you for your questions!

I was interested in exploring the ways in which a practice environment can impact nurses and their levels of job enjoyment, as I believe that it is important to understand structural aspects that hospitals and units can address in order to improve RN work experiences and outcomes.

I believe that improving practice environments (amongst other controllable factors affecting the nursing workforce) has potential to improve nurse job enjoyment and decrease negative outcomes (such as burnout, compassion fatigue, etc.), which, in turn, may assist in addressing the nursing shortage by increasing nurse retention and decreasing nurse turnover. I feel that further research needs to be conducted that specifically focuses on nurse practice environments in rural hospitals/clinics, as well as on the effectiveness of rural hospitals’ nurse recruitment and retention efforts.

Please let me know if you have any further questions!

  3. Nice job on the presentation!! How do you think COVID-19 has impacted unit-level practice environments?

    1. I think it will be interesting to compare 2019 NDNQI RN Survey PES-NWI results to 2020 results, in order to determine if there notable differences in nurse practice environments during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on what I have read and heard from nurses during my clinical rotations, I believe that practice environments have been significantly affected by COVID-19, particularly in regards to unit staffing levels, bed and resource availability, and amount of overtime required.

  4. Very well-done. Understanding nursing work environments is important for patient outcomes.

  5. What advice would you give to other undergraduate students interested in getting involved in research?

    1. I would encourage other undergraduate students that want to get involved in research to seek out opportunities within their programs, schools, and communities to contribute to or participate in research projects.
