Cassie’s Introduction

Good evening! My name is Cassie. I have been a RN for almost 2 years. I work in a critical access hospital in Central Kansas. I have worked in ED, Med/Surg, and some ICU. I am also an adjunct instructor for a PN program, this is my first year experience with this. I have done some clincal and I am also teaching a pharmacolgy class this semester, that will be going 100% online due to the current outbreak so I will be figuring out how to do that as well.

I started my medical career as a Vet Tech then years later I got my EMT and once I started running as an EMT I decided to get my RN. I really enjoy prehospital and ER is probably my favorite area to be in.

For research in my area, I know in the ED with that type of critical care things are constantly changing and recommendations come and go and sometimes come again. I will be honest I have not done a great deal of digging on certain things as with being a newer nurse I am still trying to figure out the base stuff with being out in the real world. But I know many things as an EMT that I have known as fact are changing. Keeping up with the times and new events change how we complete our practice. For all of us working in almost any area doing our best to find quality information and research on the COVID-19 is key to patient care right now. What do we need to do to protect ourselves, protect the pateints that don’t have it from the patient that does (if you have one in your facility) what things to look for, and what cleaning measures need to be taken. It can be a challenge to find clear and reliable research at times with so much out there coming at us. However, we need to know so we are not behind and providing the most proactive and protective care we can.

Welcome to the course, Cassie! I find it surprising how many nurses actually transition from vet tech to emergency nursing. One of my close friends from college is actually the director of the veterinary ICU at K-State, and I love comparing notes.

Make sure you go back and categorize your post under “Introduction Module 1”. This will be an important skill in future posts for the course.
