Introduction

Hello everyone, my name is Amy. I’ve been a student at FHSU for a couple years working towards my BSN. I graduated with my ADN from KCKCC in Dec of 2013 and currently work as a telephonic Pediatric Nurse, I absolutely love my job! I am a mom to a very sassy 10 year old and am lucky enough to get to marry the love of my life/best friend in April of this year. Not only do I work full time, have my family, planning a wedding, go to school part time, but I also started a Pure Romance business as well…so I am very busy (and maybe a little crazy) to say the least. I am looking forward to another semester of learning and things to add to my nursing tool belt. I hope to gain a lot of insight from all of you! Good luck to everyone and have an amazing semester!!

Research plays a huge role in not only my area of nursing but all areas of nursing. For my particular area of nursing in particular there is a lot of research done to determine if the particular drug I work for, is a good fit for children and for different conditions. While the drug is currently approved to work for adults in ten different conditions, it is only approved in the pediatric population in four conditions. There is also research into how the dosing needs to be adjusted based upon weight in the pediatric population. While I directly am not responsible for any of the research, I do pass along side effects to the manufacture so that there can be complete knowledge of things that take place while a patient is on drug. There is also research done to make the drug better in itself, a new formula was released last year that is more comfortable to the patient, making the overall experience on drug a much better one.

Welcome to the course, Amy! “Sassy” and 10-years-old is fairly synonymous!

The research you mention is typically noted as medical (or pharmaceutical) research by a manufacturer. Considering nursing research, how do you use this in the care you provide to patients? For example, as a telephonic pediatric nurse, I’m assuming this is like a nurse case manager. How does having a case manager promote better outcomes in vulnerable populations? The research is there to support this position!
