I think that the role traditional news sites had was more important in the past then it is now. Now, anyone can get their voice heard. The democratization of technology has allowed the smaller creators on the internet to have just as many views as news sites.
#2) Information Dissemination
This has become more important as now there a lot false news sites that news outlets have more responsibility to ensure correct information dissemination. The general populace looks to news outlets that have prestige as a trustworthy site among a sea of “fake news”
People yell at each other through the internet so often now that doing it through a news source is just tedious so this role has definitely become less important.
This is a tricky one in the United States, but generally has stayed the same. I think a lot of news sources do a good job in reporting the over 20,000 false claims President Trump has tweeted, consistently doing fact checks on them, such as this story by Washington post. In general, I do think with improved information dissemination it allows the general public to more easily hold people accountable. We do see a lot of people now who are #cancelled.
#5) Conflict resolution
This has changed the most, but become so much less important as a role in news outlets because I don’t see a lot of people changing their mind so visibly anymore. There’s a lot less enlightenment going on now.
