The AACN DNP Essential VII focuses on clinical prevention and population health for improving the nation’s health. Population health defined by the AACN is to “include aggregate, community, environment/occupational, and cultural/socioeconomic dimensions of health” (AACN, 2006). Healthy People initiatives started in 1979. The overall goal of the Healthy People initiative is to work towards a healthier nation through disease prevention. It is science-based. They use the information gathered to reset, change or improve on the goals every ten years. They identify health improvement priorities, increase public awareness and understanding of determinants of health, disease and disability, provide measurable objectives and goals, use multi-discipline collaboration, and identify research, evaluation, and data collection needs. Their goal is to assist the population is living longer, high-quality lives (About, 2018). With so much technology at our fingertips, the DNP prepared nurse can reach more patient populations than ever.
